ARGIMEL ED

Description of ARGIMEL ED:ARGIMEL ED is a rheological additive for solvent-borne systems of low to medium polarity. that provides thixotropic effect, sag control, excellent levelling and prevents pigments from long-term storage settling. The nature of ARGIMEL ED is a bentonite clay, organically modified with a quaternary alkylammonium compound.Unlike most of the other conventional organoclays, ARGIMEL ED is selfactivating and easily dispersible, hence simple and convenient to use.

COMPOSITION OF ARGIMEL ED:Smectite clay with quaternary alkilammonium salt

COLOUR:Pale cream

FORM:Free flowing powder

DENSITY:1.5 g/cm3

MOISTURE:3 %

Applications of ARGIMEL ED:ARGIMEL ED is used in a wide range of manufacturing processes for architectural paints, industrial finishes, anti-corrosive paints, road marking paints, primers, bitouminous undercoates, wood stains, to give the desired rheological control to the system.ARGIMEL ED shows particularly good performance in aliphatic mineral spirits and aromatics. Low polarity binders like alkyds and terpenes, petroleum derivatives and styrene-butadiene rubbers are also compatible with ARGIMEL ED.

Incorporation of ARGIMEL ED:ARGIMEL ED belongs to the unconventional type of organoclays group, being an easy-to-disperse, selfactivating, organobentonite. ARGIMEL ED does not require neither strong mechanical energy to disperse nor a chemical (polar) activator to reach the proper level of delamination of the organobentonite platelet stacks.

ARGIMEL ED can be added at any point in the paint manufacturing process and can be even used in post-addition to correct the final viscosity of a certain batch.Low temperature might be a cause of slow dispersion if ARGIMEL ED is added under low shear.ARGIMEL ED does not need to be pregelled to develop its full rheological properties.

If however a pregel is convenient to be produced, this won’t show the same high viscosity of a conventional organoclay activated gel.ARGIMEL ED is not effective as a gellant in a solvent alone, but it provides the same rheological properties when added to the complete system.

Coatings/Paints:ARGIMEL ED is rheology modifiers that provide controllable thixotropy, i.e. thickening, anti-settling, flow, levelling and anti-sagging properties in solvent and solvent-free coating systems. Suitable grades are available for low, medium and high polarity coating systems.

Typical benefits of ARGIMEL ED include:-Anti-settling – allowing for homogeneous pigment dispersion and distribution-Controlled surface levelling and coating thickness-Adjustable and reproducible thixotropic control at a wide temperature range-In-can storage stability-Easy to incorporate grades which do not require activation through additives, heat or shear

Printing Inks:ARGIMEL ED is used in printing inks to adjust rheological properties, especially in high-speed printing inks. ARGIMEL ED is commonly used in lithographic inks for newspapers and letterheads.

Typical benefits of ARGIMEL ED include:-Improved flow and consistency-Improved printing resolutions

Lubricants:ARGIMEL ED is suitable for medium- to high-viscosity-index mineral oils, synthetic oils and other organic fluids for rheology control.

Lubricants and greases produced with ARGIMEL ED offer the following benefits:-Less susceptible to temperature fluctuations – do not melt a high-temperatures or harden at low temperatures-Water resistance-Improved adhesion to metals

ARGIMEL ED rheological additive is specifically designed for systems based on organic solvent with low to medium polarity (white spirit, toluene, xylene, solvent, orthoxylene, styrene, aliphatic compounds; alkyd, epoxy, polyester resins, DBP, DOF, etc.). In typical coating systems, ARGIMEL ED additive provides a thixotropic effect, sag control, good leveling, and also prevents pigment settling during long storage periods.

By nature, ARGIMEL ED rheological additive is a bentonite clay organically modified with a quaternary ammonium base to develop the necessary organophilicity to improve performance in an organic environment. Unlike other conventional organoclays, the ARGIMEL ED rheological additive is self-activated and easily dispersed, which makes it easy and convenient to use.

Introduction of ARGIMEL ED additiveAdditive ARGIMEL ED belongs to bentonite - a group of so-called unusual or non-standard organoclays, which are easily dispersed and self-activated. To achieve the required level of delamination of stacks of organobentonite plates and the operation of ARGIMEL ED, neither mechanical energy for dispersion nor a chemical (polar) activator is required.

ARGIMEL ED can be applied at any point in the paint production process and can even be used after addition to correct the final viscosity of a specific batch. Due to its simplicity, this organoclay is usually added directly to the ground pigment, which is the most efficient and economical way to introduce it.

Besides, The parameters are determined on a case-by-case basis depending on the composition, batch size and equipment used. Low temperatures can cause slow dispersion if ARGIMEL ED is added at low shear.

ARGIMEL ED does not require pre-gelling in order to achieve its full rheological properties. If, however, a pregel is to be made, the latter will not have the same high viscosity as is the case with a conventional organoclay-activated gel. ARGIMEL ED additive is not effective as a thickener only when added to a solvent, however it exhibits the same rheological properties when dosed throughout the system.

Dosage of ARGIMEL ED:The amount of additive strictly depends on the type of system and the degree of thickening or other required properties. For home and industrial paints, typical levels are from 0.2% to 0.8% of ARGIMEL ED dry powder, which is sufficient to give the desired properties of the paint, in particular anti-settling properties.

Primers and printing inks require higher levels of additives (5.1% to 1%). Up to 0.3% of ARGIMEL ED powder can be used to avoid streaks.

ARGIMEL ED additive usually does not require a significant dosage compared to conventional (pregelled) organoclays. Compared to other products of this type, ARGIMEL ED has shown adaptability in terms of compatibility to a wide range of formulations.

Stability during storage of ARGIMEL ED:Within 12 months of storage of ARGIMEL ED, its quality and properties do not noticeably decrease. ARGIMEL ED is best stored in a dry and closed place in closed bags.

Due to its stability in low to medium polarity solvents, ARGIMEL ED has proven itself in solvents such as aliphatic and aromatic mineral spirits. Low polarity binders such as alkyds and terpenes, petroleum based agents and styrene butadiene rubber are also compatible with ARGIMEL ED. This additive can be used as a very convenient alternative to conventional organoclays such as ARGIMEL B4 and ARGIMEL B8.

Dosage of ARGIMEL ED:Level of addition strongly depends on the type of system and on the degree of thickening or other properties desired. For house and industrial paints, typical levels are between 0.2 % and 0.8 % of ARGIMEL ED.

For primers and printing inks, higher levels are required (0.5-1.0 %). For strong antisagging properties, up to 3.0 % can be used.Compared to other products of its type it is also proved to be more versatile in terms of compatibility to a wide range of formulations.

Storage Stability And Packing of ARGIMEL ED:ARGIMEL ED do not deteriorate in a significant way in a 36 months period. Storage ARGIMEL ED is advisable in a dry, sheltered place in closed bags.
